According to the UN projection, the world population will grow from 8.23 billion in 2025 to 9.66 billion in 2050, an increase of 17.4%. Almost two thirds of the growth will come from Africa: the populations of DR Congo, the CAR and Angola will nearly double. In Eastern Europe and East Asia populations will shrink: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Moldova and Lithuania will lose more than 20% of their residents, Japan 14.6%, South Korea 12.6%, China 11.0% and Thailand 7.3%. Among countries and territories with at least 100,000 inhabitants, the steepest decline, 22.6%, is projected for Puerto Rico (US territory). For the housing market, a growing population is a long-term source of demand, while a shrinking one carries the risk of a housing surplus.

About the data
Indicator. Change in population from 2025 to 2050, in percent. It reflects both natural increase (births minus deaths) and the migration the UN builds into its projection.
Period and source. UN, World Population Prospects 2024, medium-variant population projections for 2025 and 2050.
Calculation. Population in 2050 divided by population in 2025, minus one. WhiteIndex calculation based on UN data.
Scale. Eight classes. Red is a decline of more than 15%; orange shades are declines of 15% to 5% and 5% to 0%; green shades are growth of 0% to 10%, 10% to 25%, 25% to 50%, 50% to 75% and more than 75%. The more saturated the color, the greater the change.
Gaps. Territories for which the UN publishes no separate estimate are shown in gray: Kosovo, Northern Cyprus, Somaliland and a number of small territories. Vatican City is not shown: its population is under one thousand.
Caveats. The projection to 2050 rests on assumptions about fertility, mortality and migration and will be revised in new UN editions. For small countries and territories the projection is less reliable.
