About the data

Indicator. GDP per capita in current US dollars (World Bank code NY.GDP.PCAP.CD): a country's gross domestic product converted into dollars at the average annual exchange rate and divided by the mid-year population. It measures the size of the economy per person, not household income.

Period. For each country we take the latest year with a published value. For most countries this is 2025. Values for 2020–2024 are also mapped, with the year shown in the card and the table. The World Bank does not publish data for Taiwan, so we use the 2025 estimate of Taiwan's statistics agency (DGBAS). Jersey and Guernsey are shown using the World Bank's combined estimate for the Channel Islands, and the Åland Islands using Finland's value; they are not included in the ranking.

Scale. Eight classes with breaks at 1,000, 2,500, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, 40,000 and 70,000 dollars. The scale is logarithmic: incomes differ between countries by a factor of several hundred, and on a linear scale most countries would merge into a single color. Colors run from red through yellow to green, so the classes differ in lightness as well as hue.

Gaps. Territories with insufficient data are shown in gray.

Caveats. Nominal GDP depends on the exchange rate: when a currency weakens sharply, the indicator falls even if the economy has not shrunk. GDP at purchasing power parity is a better gauge for comparing living standards. In small financial centers (Monaco, Liechtenstein, Bermuda) GDP per capita is inflated by workers who live in neighboring countries and by corporate income.
