About the data

Indicator. Median age is the age that divides a country's population into two equal groups: half of the residents are younger and half are older. It is the simplest measure of population aging: the higher it is, the larger the share of older people.

Period and source. UN estimate as of 1 July 2025, World Population Prospects 2024, medium variant. The latest actual estimates in this edition refer to 2023; the values for 2025 are UN projections made with the same method.

Scale. Seven five-year classes: under 20, 20–25, 25–30, 30–35, 35–40, 40–45, and 45 years and older. The darker the color, the older the population.

Gaps. Territories for which the UN publishes no separate estimate are shown in gray: Kosovo, Northern Cyprus, Somaliland and a number of small territories.

Caveats. In small states and territories (Vatican City, Monaco, San Marino) the median age depends heavily on the make-up of a small population. Vatican City (57.4 years) is excluded from the comparisons in the text but is shown on the map and in the table.
